Thermo-Wood 2×4 Kotatsu — A Long, Comfortable Table Heater

During a recent stay at a ryokan in Kasumi, I rediscovered just how comfortable a kotatsu can be. Inspired by that experience, I decided to make a long, slim kotatsu of my own. I built the frame using 2×4 thermo-wood, which I’ve been especially fond of lately, then bought only the heater unit from Amazon and fixed it in place with screws. When I placed the tabletop my father had picked up onto the frame, the kotatsu was complete.

Until now, I had been using this table simply as a regular dining or work table, but in its winter configuration it feels absolutely perfect. The only drawback is that it’s difficult to find a kotatsu blanket long enough for this shape, so for the time being I’m combining three blankets to make it work.

(Postscript / Tip for Assembly)
When building a 2×4 frame from thermo-wood or pine, be sure to reinforce all four corners with L-shaped metal brackets. It greatly improves stability and durability.
