Tarot Cards (2022)

I wondered if there was something I could offer during events,
so I made my own set of tarot cards.
I began reading them lightly, almost playfully —
but before long I realized how deep the practice truly was,
and how easy it would be to fall into that depth
and never quite find my way back.
Even the smallest gesture can become
a turning point in someone’s life.

People meet, touch, influence one another.
We receive and change ourselves,
we pass something on and the other person changes.
In everyday life this is ordinary —
yet through this medium it feels amplified,
as if everything were charged with a strange intensity.
Cards shaped by “fate” are stacked on the table,
and with every reveal, emotions rise and fall.

All I do is interpret them.
And yet interpretation can reshape the past,
just as it can transform the meaning of cards
that seem to predict the future.
When many “bad” cards appear —
if they do, by chance, strike upon something essential —
then what, truly, is fortune-telling?

There is still work left for me to do here.
Even if “fate is dealt,”
a box of chocolates remains unknowable
until the moment it is opened.

Additional note

If a single dice were given two meanings —
even numbers to the right, odd numbers to the left,
small numbers “bad,” large numbers “good” —
could we really cast the dice
at the very crossroads of our lives?
